What is federal direct loan exit counseling?
You must complete exit counseling when you leave school or drop below half-time enrollment. The purpose of exit counseling is to ensure you understand your student loan obligations and are prepared for repayment. You'll learn about what your federal student loan payments will look like after school.
One-on-One Exit Counseling
It helps students understand their loans, repayment options, and timing. Exit counseling provides monthly payment estimates and information on repayment plan features, aiding students in budgeting and avoiding loan default.
Counseling overview
First-time student borrowers must complete entrance counseling before they can receive the first disbursem*nt of a Direct Loan, and all student Direct Loan borrowers must complete exit counseling shortly before they cease to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis.
Direct Subsidized Loans are given to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. You won't pay or collect interest while you are in school and during the grace period after you leave school. The Department of Education pays the loan's interest on your behalf during that time.
Once you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, or leave school, your federal student loan goes into repayment. However, if you have a Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, or Federal Family Education Loan, you have a six-month grace period before you are required to start making regular payments.
Your school will require you to sign the exit interview, and if you do not sign it, the school may: Place holds on your student account so that you cannot register for classes again. Place holds on your student account so that your transcripts will not be released to you.
The purpose of exit counseling is to ensure you understand your student loan obligations and are prepared for repayment. You'll learn about what your federal student loan payments will look like after school. We'll recommend a repayment strategy that best suits your future plans and goals.
The following items are needed for the exit counseling session: your FSA ID username and password; details on your income, financial aid, and living expenses; and the names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers for your next of kin, two references, and future employer (if known).
* This “period of time” is called the “Grace Period”. The Grace Period is 6 months for students who borrowed federal student loans from the Direct or FFEL loan programs (also known as Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans).
Federal Stafford/Direct Loan Grace Period
Regardless of whether you borrowed subsidized or unsubsidized funds, both Stafford Loans and Direct Loans have a six-month grace period.
What are the 2 major disadvantages of federal Direct Loans?
Some drawbacks of federal direct loans are that there are no subsidized federal direct loans for graduate students, borrowers who default or become otherwise unable to repay their federal direct loans will not be able to escape them by declaring bankruptcy, and undergraduates who apply for direct unsubsidized loans and ...
The Federal Direct Student Loan program offers a number of advantages, including low interest rates and fixed interest rates, but there are downsides as well. For example, you can only borrow a certain amount each year. Consider all of your financing options before deciding which type of student loan is best for you.

If you work full time for a government or nonprofit organization, you may qualify for forgiveness of the entire remaining balance of your Direct Loans after you've made 120 qualifying payments—i.e., 10 years of payments. To benefit from PSLF, you need to repay your federal student loans under an IDR plan.
If you have applied for forgiveness under a program like the PSLF or Teacher Loan Forgiveness program, your student loan servicer will notify you regarding your loan being forgiven totally, or partially with a remaining balance, depending on the program.
Direct Loans begin with the word “Direct.” Federal Family Education Loan Program loans begin with “FFEL.” Perkins Loans include the word “Perkins” in the name. If the name of your servicer starts with “Dept.
Federal student loans are disbursed either to the school or to your account before the beginning of the semester. You should receive a notification that the money has been transferred and where it has been sent. If you do not receive any disbursem*nt notification closer to the payment deadline, you must be proactive.
Failing to pay your student loan within 90 days classifies the debt as delinquent, which means your credit rating will take a hit. After 270 days, the student loan is in default and may then be transferred to a collection agency. Keeping up with your student loan payments helps improve your credit score.
Short-term, bridge and mezzanine commercial lenders (e.g., 3–5-year loans) now often require exit fee clauses in their loan instruments. Oftentimes, the lender's economic motive is to be compensated, even when the lender is unable to provide permanent financing to the same borrower at a later date.
All student loans are processed through the Department of Education's Direct Loan program. Borrowers must complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling for each year you are approved for a loan at Santa Monica College.
An exit fee, a mortgage exit fee, or a loan exit fee is most often used in a commercial mortgage or loan, and it's a fee that's due at the time the loan is paid off, similar to points paid upfront, but an exit fee is paid at the time the mortgage or loan is the payoff.
Can you save and exit fafsa?
Yes. You can save your information at any point in the application. To save your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, select “Save” on any page. Do not use the save commands built into the browser.
There are many benefits to paying off your student debt early. You will save on student loan interest and get out of debt faster while improving your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. With a higher DTI ratio and more disposable income, you could pursue other financial goals, such as buying a house or saving for retirement.
A counseling session will take 20–30 minutes to complete. You must complete the counseling in a single session. You cannot save a partially completed counseling session. If after completing counseling you would like more information about your federal aid, please go to Aid Summary in your StudentAid.gov account.
