How will I know if my student loans are forgiven?
Your loan servicer will track your qualifying monthly payments and years of repayment and will notify you when you're getting close to the point you would qualify for forgiveness of any remaining loan balance. To determine if your remaining loan balance will be forgiven, contact your loan servicer.

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you've made the equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full time for a qualifying employer.

Timelines can vary based on individual circ*mstances. In some cases, it could even take longer. While the official word from the Department of Education suggests a processing time of at least 90 business days by MOHELA, the PSLF servicer, experiences reported by borrowers range from a few weeks to over six months.
Follow loan servicer instructions to complete any final steps, submit any remaining documentation, and get your balance forgiven. You should receive a letter confirming that your loans are forgiven once your application is processed and approved.
Borrowers Could Be Short Of Student Loan Forgiveness Threshold. Since not all past loan periods count toward student loan forgiveness under the IDR Account Adjustment, even borrowers whose loans originated more than 20 or 25 years ago may not quite have reached the milestone for discharge.
All borrowers on SAVE receive forgiveness after 20 or 25 years, depending on whether they have loans for graduate school. The benefit is based upon the original principal balance of all Federal loans borrowed to attend school, not what a borrower currently owes or the amount of an individual loan.
Total relief through PSLF is now $56.7 billion for 793,400 borrowers since October 2021. Prior to the Biden-Harris Administration's fixes to PSLF, only about 7,000 borrowers had ever received forgiveness.
How long does it take MOHELA to forgive loans?
To process forgiveness, a final review of your account will be conducted, which will take at least 90 business days. PSLF Eligible and Qualifying Payments (Payment Counters): Once your PSLF form has been processed, you will be notified of changes to your payment counts from additional periods of certified employment.
If your PSLF form is approved for forgiveness, then you'll be notified that the entire remaining balance of your eligible Direct Loans will be forgiven, including all outstanding interest and principal.
Many factors impact processing times, including if your loans were with another servicer and require a transfer, if the form had any missing fields such as an employer's EIN, the number of PSLF forms we receive, and if ED is reviewing your employer's eligibility, among other factors.

You may notice your former servicer has cleared your loan account. For example, your loan balance may come up as “paid in full” on your former servicer's website or on your credit report. This does not mean you've received loan forgiveness. This is part of the loan transfer process.

MOHELA processes payments and documents sent over from your prior federal student loan servicer. Everything is generally processed within 30 business days. Payments will be made effective as of the date your prior servicer received the payment.
As long as your loans were in good standing at the time they were discharged and your accounts are being reported properly to the credit reporting bureaus, you won't see a huge difference in your score. On the other hand, you could see your score drop if your account wasn't in good standing prior to the discharge.
To clarify, MOHELA doesn't have any exclusive student loan forgiveness programs. But MOHELA borrowers may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs through the PSLF program or income-driven repayment plans. Here's what you need to know about your MOHELA loan forgiveness options.

Does forbearance count towards forgiveness?
All borrowers affected by these errors will be placed in forbearance by their servicer until the issues are resolved and any months in forbearance will count as credit towards loan forgiveness through Public Service Loan Forgiveness or Income Driven Repayment.
