Synopsis
The timeless tale of a special place where magic, hope and love grow.
A young British girl born and reared in India loses her neglectful parents in an earthquake. She is returned to England to live at her uncle's castle. Her uncle is very distant due to the loss of his wife ten years before. Neglected once again, she begins exploring the estate and discovers a garden that has been locked and forgotten. Aided by one of the servants' boys, she begins restoring the garden, and eventually discovers some other secrets of the manor.

I want to see this the way you do.
You watched this as a little girl and fell in love, or as an adult and remembered your life as a little girl and fell in love. I watched this and yearned to have lived that experience, but I have nothing but a void there. I can see the colors and the sweeping camera and the use of wind to fill every shot of the garden with movement and the beautiful, gentle beasts infusing the garden with innocence and joy. I can see the scope of the castle and the allure of its mysteries. I wept at the end.
But I see this now with an adult's eyes, and so I…

an angry heartbroken girl allows herself to be won over by simple pleasures and small kindnesses, something that few adults have the capacity to do, then saves all the men in her life. watching this (or reading the book) is the closest thing to actually becoming a 10-year-old girl and spending months exploring an old house with 100 rooms of secret things, and prancing around a garden talking to animals and falling in innocent love. i cried through the entire thing, for how beautiful and sad and happy it was and lost time and imaginary places i used to visit and blah blah blah. ugh, just watch it. if the kids are too corny for you i can't imagine the cinematography and sweeping landscapes and montages of blooming flowers won't win you over. if even that doesn't work, pretend the beginning is a haunted house movie. i can't wait to watch this again.

Review by Houston Coley 🌪️ ★★★★½ 1
I loved this movie as a kid, but always assumed it would be cheesy and cheap if I ever went back and revisited it. Turns out, it's got all this crazy artistry I didn't even remember - and it was probably one of the first things I watched as a child that felt genuinely atmospheric and melancholy. Roger Deakins was the cinematographer, holy cow. Stuart Craig was the production designer! Legendary composer Zbigniew Preisner! Maggie Smith! What a filmè. The sense of place constructed around the manor house and garden is just mesmerizing, and the mysteriousness and intrigue of the moors still captivates me. Glad I watched it before heading to England tomorrow.

“You’re here. The magic worked.”
Try and name something as endearing, magical, and wonderful as angry, hurting children finding independence, beauty, and joy within nature. You can’t.
