This recipe requires no cooking and is easily the best playdough recipe you’ll find!

Benefits of DIY Playdough

By making your own DIY playdough, you will know exactly what ingredients are inside, allowing you to create a safe sensory experience for your child. This is especially great for those children who have allergies or sensitive skin, or for families that are avoiding food dyes and other questionable ingredients.

This no-cook playdough recipe is also a lot cheaper than most you will find at the store. It uses common household ingredients and does not take much to make. An added benefit is that you will be able to save money making your own playdough at home.

Not only is playdough fun, but there are also plenty of benefits of playing with playdough for your children too!

What’s also fun is that with homemade playdough, you can customize it to fit your needs. If you want your child to feel different textures, you can add sprinkles, coarse salt, and other items inside. Or, you can use natural dyes to create playdough in all the different colors your child wants to play with.

Playdough is extremely therapeutic and one of the most common benefits is that it is very relaxing to touch and play with it! Adults even find it very calming when they play along with their toddlers (I certainly do!).

Often when your child is playing with a playdough, they are so focused on what they are doing, thus slowly building their concentration. Not to mention that it’s also great for motor skills development.

Another benefit of playdough is that there is no right or wrong way to play with it. It is totally up to your child to do whatever they want. This boosts their creativity as they make whatever comes to their mind! They are not following a specific pattern; they are creating beautiful, unique art.

Another common playdough benefit is how incredible it is for building the tiny muscles in your child’s hand. Kneading the dough, squishing it, and playing around with it help your toddler’s fine motor development.

Easy DIY Playdough Recipe

Here is the best playdough no-cook recipe you will love to make for your kids! Before getting started, make sure that you not only have the four needed ingredients, but that you also have a large bowl and an airtight container ready to go.

Please note that a lot of playdough recipes call for vegetable oil, but this recipe uses olive oil or coconut oil. While your child won’t be ingesting the dough, we recommend avoiding vegetable oils like canola oil and generic “vegetables oils” because they are highly inflammatory.

Homemade Playdough-Making Tips

Easy Homemade Playdough Recipe: No Cream of Tartar Needed (7)
  • Wait for the playdough to cool down for a few minutes before adding in more flour if it looks too runny. It takes a bit for the water to absorb fully. It is better to wait instead of adding too much! Too much flour will make your playdough crumble. Too little flour will make it runny.
  • If the playdough feels dried out the next time you use it, you can add in a little bit of oil to help get it soft again.
  • Some people like adding hot water to make the playdough soft, but cold water usually works just as well. If you try with cold and it doesn’t work out, next time, try hot to see if it makes a difference for you!

This is just a basic DIY playdough recipe. If you want, you can always add in more things to make it fun for your kids.

  • You can add in spices! Nutmeg and cinnamon have a nice, strong smell. Add a dash of these spices to keep your DIY playdough taste-safe and safe for little hands.
  • Add essential oils. If you are looking to bring a little aromatherapy into your child’s playtime, you can also add your favorite essential oil (I would go with lemon personally). Please note that if you add in any essential oils, this playdough would no longer be taste-safe. Only use essential oils that are generally safe for younger kids.
  • Mix in a variety of textures. If you want different textures, add some dried flowers or herbs, salt, sprinkles, or other items. Sparkles are also a fun add-in!
  • Make it colorful. Add in some food-based natural dyes to make your playdough colorful! You can add in a food ingredient (such as spirulina or turmeric) or a premade natural dye in the water before you mix the ingredients together. You can also add your natural dyes in the middle of the dough after you finish preparing it, and just knead the color inside.
  • Bring on the fun play. Homemade playdough gives your little one a great opportunity for sensory play. To make it even more fun, give your little one some cookie cutters and rollers like these non-toxic ones from Green Toys.

6 Fun Playdough Activities

  1. You can use this playdough recipe for preschool activities. Have your children create numbers or letters by rolling out the dough!
  2. Make small batches and add in a variety of colors to make all sorts of things, from rainbows to flowers, pretend food, and more! Note: we do not recommend using food coloring and dyes because they can cause reactions (and food dyes are on my “no way” list).
  3. For a fun surprise, add a drop of food dye in the middle of the dough. When your child starts to knead it, the playdough will slowly start to change colors!
  4. Bring out some fake ice cream cones and an ice cream scoop, and pretend to have an ice cream shop! Your child can scoop out the playdough and try to balance it on the cone.
  5. Find random items around the house and have your child stamp them in the playdough to see the fun prints. Try bubble wrap, noodles, pinecones, legos, comb, etc.
  6. If your child is old enough, have them help you make the playdough, too, for another fun activity. This will help to teach math and science skills as they measure out and observe what happens when the water is added.

Enjoy Some Hands-On Play!

There are countless ways to play with playdough, making it something to always have in your house. Use this no cook easy playdough recipe next time your child asks for playdough and enjoy all the memories that will come from it!

This recipe is so great and simple to make. Keep this handy for a rainy day or anytime you want to engage your little one in some focused and fun sensory play.

It is truly my favorite homemade playdough recipe (and I tried a few different recipes, including ones you have to cook and ones that use cream of tartar). With only four ingredients, it serves as a great base for any kind of sensory play that you want to do. And you will almost always have the ingredients in your cupboard.

And it’s easy to make for kids of all ages and lasts a very long time (just make sure to store your playdough in a reliable airtight container for best results).

Frequently Asked Questions About DIY Playdough

How long will homemade playdough last?

Usually, homemade playdough will last a few weeks if you store it properly. When your child is finished playing with their handmade dough, make sure to put it in an air-tight container. You can also store it in the refrigerator too if you prefer.

Another great way to make your DIY playdough last longer is to wash your child’s hands right before playing with it to help keep it fresh.

Does homemade playdough need to be refrigerated?

You can always keep your homemade playdough in the fridge, but it is not entirely necessary. If you live in a humid place, it is better to keep it in the fridge to preserve it longer. It is also best to keep it out of direct sunlight.

Is cooked playdough better than uncooked?

This depends on what you want. Some prefer cooked playdough, while others find no difference between the two.

This no-cook playdough recipe without cream of tartar is nice and soft and will last a few months, making it equal, if not better, than cooked playdough!

Do I need cream of tartar in my homemade playdough?

No, you don’t need to use cream of tartar to make homemade playdough.

Cream of tartar can help with making the playdough softer and help to preserve it, but it is not essential. If your playdough has salt, you won’t have to worry about adding cream of tartar, because salt acts as a preservative too.

Is this playdough recipe edible?

It is not edible, but it is taste-safe! All the ingredients inside are ones you would use to make bread, so if your child tries to eat it, it won’t hurt them, but it also won’t taste good either! It does have a high salt content so be sure to supervise your little one while they are playing with it!

What makes this recipe so good?

This playdough no cook recipe is the very best recipe for a few key reasons:

  • It doesn’t use cream of tartar
  • It makes a smaller batch
  • No stovetop or saucepan required
  • It uses simple ingredients you likely already have at home
  • It has a nice, smooth texture
  • It takes minutes to make!

This is pretty much everything I am looking for in a recipe.
